In the collective imagination, the ocean depths are inhospitable places for humans, populated by monstrous creatures that seem straight out of the most fantastic of novels. This depiction, however true, does not do justice to the marvelous complexity of the underwater worlds, so far from our gaze, rich with life forms-from deep-sea fish to extremophilic microorganisms-evolved to live in one of the most extreme and peculiar ecosystems on our planet.<\/p>\n
